Meet the Board
Encore's swim team is an entirely volunteer-run non-profit organization. All of our Board members have swimmers on the team this year and are happy to chat if you have questions!
Michelle Mauldwin is our 2024 Encore Board President. She is supported by Kelly Haan (Vice President), Brian (Treasurer), and Balbina Mattier (Secretary).
MICHELLE MAULDWIN - PRESIDENT
Michelle has been part of the Encore family since 2010 and it has been such an amazing experience for her and her family. She has loved watching both of her children grow a love for swimming and build countless friendships throughout their years on the team. After volunteering in several different positions throughout the seasons, she has now been given the opportunity to take on the position of team President. She can’t wait to see what the season brings!
KELLY HAAN - VICE PRESIDENT
This is Kelly's second season with Encore. She has two daughters on the team, Penny (6) and Jean (9), who loved being on the team last year and can't wait for the season to start and pool water to get warm! She was amazed how even in 6U they were swimming 25M butterfly by the middle of the season. Kelly is the person behind the replies to all info@ emails, and you will find her on the pool deck during the 5-7pm practice hours - she looks forward to saying hello at the pool!
BRIAN MENDENHALL - TREASURER
Brian Mendenhall is Encore's Treasurer for 2024. This is his second year in this role and his 14 year old daughter's fourth year with Encore. When not keeping track of swim team finances, Brian is out at the pool or baseball field watching his twins compete.
BALBINA MATTIER - SECRETARY
This is Balbina’s second season with Encore. She enjoys working with the community to provide a fun and engaging swim season for kids of all ages.

NICOLE BLACK - REGISTRAR
Nicole is Encore's Registrar for the third season. She assists with registration for all swimmers and helps confirm volunteer hours are met before deposit checks are shredded. Nicole loves to tell everyone she knows about Encore and is known for recruiting/badgering families until they join the team. So far no complaints after a season with Encore!
Nicole was on the Brookside swim team in Saratoga starting at the age 5 for 7 years. She also swam for Saratoga High School (100 years ago). She believes every California child should be a strong swimmer and educated on all strokes. Her three kids ages 11, 9, and 7 have swam with Encore for three seasons.
MIKE CHU - WEBSITE ADMINISTRATOR & PHOTOGRAPHER
Mike has been with Encore since 2022 when his daughter Melanie joined the team. Since 2023 he has been working as Encore’s website administrator and de facto team photographer. If you take any great photos during meets (or want to help with team photography), please contact him! Fun fact about Mike: despite his dedication to helping the swim team, he embarrassingly does not know how to swim!
MICHELLE BARTE - SOCIAL CHAIR
Michelle manages the team's social media accounts so you can easily find her on deck taking pictures and videos of the team. She also helps with social events and activities for the team both during the season and off-season. Past events have included beach days, swim time at the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center, Zoom sessions during quarantine, Friendsgiving and pool parties. Some fun bonus activities have included underwater photo sessions, pie the coaches, introducing spirit "Theme Thursdays" including sports day, stuffed animal day, dress as a coach day, etc. Help with team spirit has included team cheers, poster making and sticker days. It's the small fun things that hopefully add to your swimmer's experience with Encore!
This will be Michelle's family's 10th year with Encore. Her swimmers are Coach El and JJ. Michelle swam competitively for her high school and became a swim instructor and lifeguard for the City of Watsonville while in high school. She was a swim instructor and lifeguard at the University of San Francisco while in undergrad, and has raised two incredibly talented swimmers that are now in high school.
While at Encore, Michelle has served as a Timer (2 years), Co-Fundraising Chair, Secretary, President (3 years) and now Social Chair (3 years). She's also helped with coach hiring and liaison, gear, swim-a-thon, coordinating a team photographer for professional photos, dining out, recruitment and whatever the team needed that I could help with.
WE WILL SEE YOU ON THE POOL DECK!
Please come by and say hello to any and all of us during practices! We are typically near the sign-in table at the start of practice, as well as taking pictures and assisting where needed on the pool deck. We love to meet all of our swimmers and parents, and we'll welcome your input across the season.
